Where Are Our Mothers?, digital collage, 14" x 11"
In the post-colonial, global economy,
human labor has become a leading Philippine export. More than 8
million Filipinos—about 10% of the working-age
population—are working overseas. In 2007, it is estimated
these workers sent $15 billion (US) home to the Philippines.
Some would argue that this infusion of capital is in the
national interest, but at what cost to individual Filipinos,
their families and the fabric of Filipino society?
The children’s photo is by Amaryllis T.
