“The National Interest”
series ponders the erosion of indigenous human values by
Western-style economics. Colonizers no longer physically govern
the Philippines, but the exploitation continues on an
ever-deeper and more destructive level.Contrasting hard facts
and cold numbers (the Western view) of the Overseas Filipino
Worker economy with blurred and grainy faces of the children
left behind raises questions about the true meaning of security
and success. The children were
photographed by “Sayote Queen,” a prolific and
talented photographer who resides in the Philippines. Photo
